Veneers Q&A
What are veneers?
Veneers are thin shells of ceramic that Dr. Nguyen affixes to the front of your natural, permanent teeth in order to improve their appearance. If you chip a tooth, you might only need one veneer. However, most people get six or eight to create an even, symmetrical smile.
What types of issues can veneers correct?
Dental veneers are incredibly versatile. At Portrait Dental, Dr. Nguyen uses them to address a variety of cosmetic imperfections, including:
- Broken teeth
- Chipped teeth
- Pointed teeth
- Unusually-shaped teeth
- Smaller than average teeth
- Severe discoloration
You might also benefit from veneers if you have gaps or spaces between your teeth.
Am I a candidate for veneers?
To determine if you’re a candidate for veneers, make an appointment with Dr. Nguyen at Portrait Dental.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Nguyen asks you questions about your goals for treatment and performs an oral exam. If you have crooked teeth or cavities, you might need to undergo a root canal or orthodontic treatment prior to getting veneers.
Dr. Nguyen also takes a series of X-rays, which he reads to determine the health of your teeth and jawbones.
What is the process of getting veneers?
Getting veneers usually takes a series of appointments. If Dr. Nguyen determines your teeth are healthy and you’re a good candidate for veneers, he begins treatment by administering a local anesthetic and carefully shaving a thin layer of enamel off each tooth, about one millimeter thick.
Next, he takes impressions of your teeth using dental putty. Dr. Nguyen sends your impressions to a laboratory that manufactures your veneers.
A week or two later, you return to Portrait Dental for your second appointment. Dr. Nguyen lines up your veneers and permanently bonds them to your natural teeth.
How do I care for my veneers?
If you want your veneers to last for 10-15 years, it’s important you take good care of them. Dr. Nguyen recommends brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing once each day, and visiting Portrait Dental for a professional exam and dental cleaning every six months.
You should also try and avoid bad habits like nail biting and chewing on hard candies or ice. All of these activities increase your risk of cracking or chipping a veneer.
